From reigning world champions to rising stars, Skate America promises thrilling performances across all four disciplines: men’s singles, women’s singles, pairs, and ice dance. Here’s everything you need to know about the event, the athletes to watch, and what’s at stake as the Grand Prix Series unfolds.

What is Skate America?

Skate America is the first stop of the six-event ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, a series that showcases the world’s best skaters in a battle for top placements and a coveted spot at the Grand Prix Final in December. The competition, which began in 1979, has become one of the most prestigious figure skating events in the United States, often serving as a key indicator of who might contend for medals at the World Championships and the Olympics.

This year, Skate America takes place in Allen, Texas, and will feature both well-established champions and emerging talent, all competing for gold medals and Grand Prix points. With five more stops after Skate America — in Canada, France, Japan, Finland, and China — only the top six skaters or teams in each discipline will advance to the Grand Prix Final in Grenoble, France, in December.

U.S. Skaters Headline the Event

The spotlight at Skate America will shine brightly on several U.S. skaters, including world champion Ilia Malinin, ice dancers Madison Chock and Evan Bates, and world silver medalist Isabeau Levito. These athletes are expected to deliver standout performances as they aim to continue their dominance on the international stage.

Ilia Malinin: At just 19 years old, Malinin has already made history as the only skater to land a quadruple Axel in competition. The reigning world champion will be vying for his third consecutive Skate America title, a feat that has only been accomplished by one other skater in the past two decades — Nathan Chen, who won four titles from 2017 to 2020. Malinin’s ability to perform technically demanding elements, combined with his artistry and athleticism, makes him a favorite to win the men’s singles competition.

Madison Chock and Evan Bates: The reigning world champions in ice dance, Chock and Bates, are looking to tie the record for the most Skate America titles in their discipline. With four titles already to their name, they are aiming to match the record set by Tanith White and Ben Agosto, who won five titles in the 2000s. Chock and Bates have been a dominant force in ice dance for years, and their chemistry, precision, and innovative choreography are sure to captivate audiences.

Isabeau Levito: At 17, Levito is one of the most promising young stars in U.S. figure skating. After winning silver at the 2023 World Championships, she enters Skate America with the goal of becoming the first U.S. women’s singles skater to win the event since Ashley Wagner in 2016. Although Mariah Bell won Skate America in 2020, that year’s competition featured primarily American skaters due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, so a victory in 2024 would mark a significant milestone in Levito’s career.

Other Notable Competitors

In addition to the headlining U.S. skaters, several other athletes are set to make waves at Skate America.

Elyce Lin-Gracey: Making her senior Grand Prix debut, Elyce Lin-Gracey has already outscored Levito in recent domestic competitions. The 2024 season marks her transition to the senior ranks, and she’ll be looking to make a strong impression on the international stage. Keep an eye on Lin-Gracey as she competes against some of the top women’s skaters in the world.

Bradie Tennell: A 2018 Olympian and two-time U.S. champion, Bradie Tennell returns to competition after missing most of last season due to a broken ankle. Tennell has a reputation for consistency and resilience, and her return to Skate America will be a test of her ability to regain her top form.

Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea: The U.S. national pairs champions will face tough competition at Skate America, including the reigning world champions Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara of Japan. Kam and O’Shea will be looking to build on their national success and prove that they can compete with the world’s best in pairs skating.

The Road to the Grand Prix Final

Skate America is just the beginning of the Grand Prix Series, which spans six weeks and five additional countries. After Skate America, the series moves to Canada, France, Japan, Finland, and China, with the top six skaters in each discipline qualifying for the Grand Prix Final in Grenoble, France. The Grand Prix Final is often seen as a preview of the World Championships, which take place the following March.
